Untamed Rainforests and Remote Savannahs

Guyana

Bordered by Suriname on the east, Brazil in the south, Suriname on the east and the Atlantic coastline on the northeast, Guyana is a hidden treasure in South America. More than 80% of the country is covered with virgin rainforests, savannahs and serpentine rivers, making it an extraordinary destination for lovers of nature and wildlife. Still untouched by tourism, Guyana receives as many tourists in one year as Machu Picchu receives in one day.

Travellers can venture deep into the rainforest and savannahs to catch site of the myriad of bird species, the giant river otter, giant anteater, red howler monkeys and the jaguar, the largest cat in the Western Hemisphere. Guyana is now well set up with eco-lodges that one can use as a base to explore these pristine areas. Many of these are community run giving travellers an opportunity to learn about Amerindian culture. No visit to Guyana can be left without a visit to the magnificent Kaieteur Falls that is approximately five times as high as Niagara Falls.

Overland travel from one Guiana to another is in itself an adventure. French Guiana is best know for Devil’s Island, once a penal colony popularized by author Henri Charriere in the biography entitled ‘Papillon’. Surinam’s capital city Paramaribo has a charming old town that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Contact us for combined tours to all three Guiana’s.
